Our Story
50,000 BC - Geological adventures
It takes a long time to create the perfect rafting spot. Mountains had to form, an ice-age had to come (and go!), leaving behind vast glaciers, deep valleys and the narrow Rangitata Gorge. The glacier still feeds the river to this day.
1855 - Land ho!
Two friends JBA Acland and CC Trip arrived from England with the dream of setting up the first Canterbury High Country Sheep Station. They settled in the shadow of Mt Peel, just a stones throw from the Rangitata Gorge. Little did they know that 150 years on their descendants would still be farming the same land and enjoying the thrills of the river.
Sometime in the 80s . . .
The first recorded rafting of the Rangitata was completed by Neil Oppit of River Runners Rotorua. At the time, most people thought they were crazy, but they knew they were onto something great!
1986 - RR takes the plunge
With a desire to share the thrills and scenery of the river with more people, we started Rangitata Rafts in 1986. Since then, there’s never been a dull moment, and loads of people have joined us along the way to discover the fun of rafting for themselves.
1986 - The Lodge
The mighty Rangitata Rafts Lodge left its former (slightly dull) life as a Catholic school in Geraldine and settled into its new home beside the gorgeous Rangitata River. It's now our permanent rafting base and provides accommodation for backpackers and travellers.
Now it’s your turn!
We're passionate about giving people the best rafting experience in New Zealand and we'd love you to become part of our story! So what are you waiting for? Get in touch and book your trip today!
